What iS Self Determination

Self-determination is a way to choose the services and supports you need to live the life you want. It is different from the traditional form of services because it gives you more freedom and control over the choice and manner in which services are delivered.

Currently, the regional center decides what services you qualify for and pays for them. With the self-determination program, you use that money to buy the services you need and want.*

You are eligible for the Self-Determination program if:

• You have a developmental disability and are or will be receiving services from a California regional center.
• You are over 3 years-old or are under 3 and qualify for services through the Lanterman Act.
• You do not live in a licensed long-term health care facility, or are in the midst of or planning on transitioning out of a      long-term health care facility through the Self-determination program. 

You can choose services that support, enrich and help you achieve your goals, such as:

• Socialization and community awareness assistance
• Recreation or leisure activities
• Individual training or education
• Hiring your own support staff
• Assistance starting own business
• Crisis and intervention support
• Dental services
• and more

Through self-determination, you can still continue receiving traditional services, such as transportation support, personal assistance, individual living specialist and employment supports as well, but the service provider is paid from your budget.
